·        The Paris Agreement on Climate Change came into force on November 4, 2016.

·        The agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France. 

·        The agreement became effective when 55 countries, accounting for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions, ratified it. 

·        The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty that aims to:

  • Limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels
  • Achieve global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible
  • Achieve a climate neutral world by mid-century 

As of June 2020, 195 signatories and 189 countries have joined the Paris Agreement.

The United States rejoined the agreement on February 19, 2021.
