Question

Twice the larger of two numbers is the more than five times the smaller a the sum of four times the larger a three times the smaller is 71. What the numbers?

A.

43, 8

B.

17, 1

C.

14, 5

D.

11, 9

Correct option is C

Let the two numbers be x (the larger number) and y (the smaller number). We are given two conditions:
According to question- 2x = 5y + 5 (Equation 1) 4x + 3y = 71 (Equation 2)
From equation (1): 2x = 5y + 5 Divide both sides by 2: x = (5y + 5)/2 (Equation 3)
Substitute x = (5y + 5)/2 into equation (2): 4((5y + 5)/2) + 3y = 71 Simplify: 2(5y + 5) + 3y = 71 10y + 10 + 3y = 71 13y + 10 = 71 13y = 61 y = 61/13 = 5
Substitute y = 5 into equation (3): x = (5(5) + 5)/2 x = (25 + 5)/2 x = 30/2 = 15
Thus, the two numbers are 14 and 5.
