    Question

Three statements are given, followed by three conclusions (I), (II), and (III). You have to consider these statements to be true, even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. You are to decide which of the given conclusions logically follow(s) from the given statements.
    Statements:
    (1) All fruits are vegetables
    (2) No apple is vegetable
    (3) Some apples are bananas
    Conclusions:
    (I) Some bananas are fruits
    (II) No apple is fruit
    (III) No fruit is banana

    A.

    Only conclusion (III) follows

    B.

Only either conclusion (I) or (II) follows

    C.

Only either conclusion (I) or (III), and (II) follow

    D.

    None follows

    Correct option is C

    Given:
    (1) All fruits are vegetables
    (2) No apple is a vegetable
    (3) Some apples are bananas

Conclusion (I): Some bananas are fruits.
From (3): Some apples are bananas
From (2) and (1): Apples are not fruits
So, those bananas (which are apples) cannot be fruits.
No definite link between bananas and fruits.
    Conclusion (I) does not follow.
Conclusion (II): No apple is fruit
From (1): All fruits ⊆ vegetables
From (2): No apple is a vegetable
    So, apples cannot be fruits.
Hence, No apple is fruit definitely follows.
    Conclusion (II) follows.
Conclusion (III): No fruit is banana.
We know fruits ⊆ vegetables, and apples (some of which are bananas) are not vegetables.
But there is no definite statement that bananas cannot be vegetables or fruits.
    Conclusion (III) does not follow.
So, Only either conclusion (I) or (III), and (II) follow
    Correct option is (c).
