    Question

The quick lime as it comes from kilns is called as-

    A.

    Hydraulic lime

    B.

    Lump lime

    C.

    Milk lime

    D.

    Hydrated lime

    Correct option is B

The quick lime (calcium oxide, CaO) that comes directly from the kilns after the process of calcination is known as lump lime. This form of lime is obtained by heating limestone (calcium carbonate) in kilns at high temperatures. The quick lime, also called lump lime, is highly reactive and needs to be slaked or hydrated before use. It is different from hydrated lime, which is obtained after slaking with water, and hydraulic lime, which sets underwater. Milk lime refers to lime dissolved in water (lime water).
