Question

The given graph shows the percentage-wise distribution of different mobile phone models (A to F) produced by a mobile company in 2008 and 2009. The total number of mobile phones produced in 2008 was 4,50,000 and that in 2009 was 6,40,000.

(If a value for any model in between a range, consider it to be at midpoint, e.g any point between 10 and 20 should be considered 15.)

For which model was the increase/decrease in production volume between 2008 and 2009 the minimum?

A.

Model C

B.

Model A

C.

Model B

D.

Model E

Correct option is D

Given:

The total number of mobile phones produced in 2008 = 4,50,000

The total number of mobile phones produced in 2009 = 6,40,000

Solution:
Model A:

2008: 30% × 4,50,000 = 1,35,000

2009: 40% × 6,40,000 = 2,56,000

Change in production for Model A:

Change = 2,56,000 – 1,35,000 = 1,21,000

Model B:

2008: 15% × 4,50,000 = 67,500

2009: 20% × 6,40,000 = 1,28,000

Change in production for Model B:

Change = 1,28,000 - 67,500 = 60,500

Model C:

2008: 20% × 4,50,000 = 90,000

2009: 15% × 6,40,000 = 96,000

Change in production for Model C:

Change = 96,000 − 90,000 = 6,000

Model E:

2008: 15% × 4,50,000 = 67,500

2009: 10% × 6,40,000 = 64,000

Change in production for Model E:

Change=64,000− 67,500 = - 3,500

The model with the minimum change in production is Model E, with a decrease of −3,500.
