    Question

The crystal structure of α- iron is-

    A.

    Close packed hexagonal

    B.

    Body centered cubic

    C.

    Simple cubic

    D.

    Face centered cubic

    Correct option is B

Alpha iron is the ferrite phase of iron, which exists at room temperature and up to 910°C. It is the stable phase of iron at lower temperatures in the iron-carbon phase diagram.
    Crystal Structure:
    · Alpha iron (α-iron) has a Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) crystal structure.
    · In BCC, atoms are located at the corners of the cube and one atom is in the center of the cube.
    · Total atoms per unit cell = 2.
    Properties of Alpha Iron (BCC):
    · Soft and Ductile: Due to relatively low packing efficiency of BCC (68%).
    · Magnetic Behavior: Alpha iron is ferromagnetic up to its Curie temperature (770∘C).
    · Low Density: Packing efficiency is lower than FCC or HCP structures.
