Width of each arm = 6 cm

Vertical extension above and below the center = 12 cm each

Horizontal extension left and right from the center = 12 cm each

Formula Used:

Area of rectangle = Length × Breadth

Total area = Area of vertical rectangle + Area of horizontal rectangle − Area of overlapping part

Solution:

Total height of vertical rectangle = 12 + 6 + 12 = 30 cm

Width of vertical rectangle = 6 cm

Area of vertical rectangle = 30 × 6 = 180 cm2

Total width of horizontal rectangle = 12 + 6 + 12 = 30 cm

Height of horizontal rectangle = 6 cm

Area of horizontal rectangle = 30 × 6 = 180 cm2

Overlapping central square (counted twice)

Overlap area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm2

Total area of the figure:

180 + 180 - 36 = 324 cm2
