Question

PN is a secant intersecting a circle at points M and N such that PN > PM. A tangent PT is drawn to the circle touching it at T. If PM = 32 cm and PT = 40 cm, what is the length (in cm) of the chord MN?

A.

36

B.

50

C.

20

D.

18

Correct option is D

 Given:
PN is a secant intersecting a circle at points M and N such that PN  >  PM.

A tangent PT is  the circle touching it at T.

Concept Used:

PT2=PM×PNPT^2 = PM \times PN

Solution:

PT=40cmPT = 40cm

PM=32cmPM = 32 cm

402=32×PN40^2 = 32 \times PN

1600=32×PN1600 = 32 \times PN

PN=160032=50cmPN = \frac{1600}{32} = 50cm

PN=PM+MNPN = PM + MN PN=PM+MNPN = PM + MN

50=32+MN50 = 32 +MN50=32+MN

MN=50−32MN = 50 - 32MN=5032

MN=18MN = 18MN=18

The length of the chord MNMNMN is 18 cm.
