Thaikkattu Ayya Swami (1814 - 1909)
Born in 1814 in Pampumkadu, Malabar, to Kashyapa gotra member Muthukumaran and Shaiva Vellala community member Rukmini Ammal.
He was a great yogi who gave equal importance to spirituality and materiality, engaging with the common people irrespective of caste, religion, class, color, or gender. He granted equal status to those from lower castes alongside Brahmins and himself. Notably, at the Thaippuya feast in Thiruvananthapuram, he initiated the "panthi bhojanam" (communal feast) to eradicate untouchability by having Ayyankali, born in the Pulaya community, dine alongside Brahmins and himself. This was one of the first such communal meals in the world.
