On what principle does a reciprocating pump work?
    Question

On what principle does a reciprocating pump work?

    A.

    Centrifugal force

    B.

Rotation of impeller to develop lifting pressure

    C.

Create a reciprocating motion by sucking and discharge of fluid by using piston

    D.

    Forced vortex flow

    Correct option is C

Reciprocating Pump:- A reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump as sucks and raises the liquid by actually displacing it with a piston or plunger that executes a reciprocating motion in a closely fitted cylinder.
    • The amount of liquid pumped is equal to the volume displaced by the piston.
    • The reciprocating pump is best suited for relatively small capacities and high heads.
Single-acting reciprocating pump: This has one suction valve and one discharge valve. When the piston is moved backward, suction happens and when it moves forward, the delivery valve opens up to discharge the liquid.
Double-acting reciprocating pump: In double acting reciprocating pump suction and delivery strokes occur together. When the plunger moves forward, it makes the water to move out from the cylinder through the discharge valve at right side and the adjacent suction valve is closed in position.
