Question

4/7 of a pole is in the mud. When 1/3 of it is pulled out, an 8 meters long piece of the pole still remains in the mud. What is the total length of the pole?

A.

21 metre

B.

12 metre

C.

30 metre

D.

25 metre

Correct option is A

Let the total length of the pole be L meters.
Initially, the part of the pole in the mud
= 4/7 × L
= 4L/7
When 1/3 of the part in the mud is pulled out,
the length pulled out from the mud
= (1/3) × (4L/7)
= 4L/21
So, the part of the pole still remaining in the mud
= 4L/7 − 4L/21
Taking LCM = 21,
= (12L − 4L) / 21
= 8L/21
According to the question, this remaining part is 8 meters.
So,
8L/21 = 8
Divide both sides by 8,
L/21 = 1
Therefore,
L = 21 meters
The total length of the pole is 21 meters.
