Question

In the following number-pairs the second number is obtained by applying certain mathematical operations to the first number. Which number should replace X and Y so that the pattern followed by the two numbers on the left side of :: is same as that on the right side of :: ?

(NOTE: Operations should be performed on the whole numbers, without breaking down the number into its constituent digits. E.g. 13 - Operations on 13 such as adding/subtracting/multiplying etc. to 13 can be performed. Breaking down 13 into 1 and 3 and then performing mathematical operations on 1 and 3 is not allowed.)

X : 243 :: 17 : Y

A.

X = 31 , Y = 169

B.

X = 27 , Y = 156

C.

X = 25 , Y = 171

D.

X = 34 , Y = 148

Correct option is C

Given X : 243 :: 17 : Y
Logic - (Nine times of first number) + 18 = Second number
X : 243
X×\times 9 + 18 = 243
25 ×\times 9 +  18 = 243
So, X = 25
17 : Y
17 ×\times 9 + 18 = Y
153 + 18 = Y
171 = Y
So, X = 25 , Y = 171
Thus, the correct option is: (c)
