Ravenstein recognized distance-decay as one of the laws of migration.
Intervening opportunity model was propounded by Stouffer.
    Information booster:
    Lee theory of migration:
Everett Lee proposed theory of migration in 1966. He begins the formulation with factors which lead to spatial theory of mobility of population in any area.
    Factors are:
Factors associated with place of origin.
Factors associated with place of destination.
    Intervening obstacles
    Personal factors.
    Ravenstein’s law of migration
E.G. Ravenstein pioneered the articulation of the 'laws of migration' as far back as 1885. Through analysis of birthplace data, Ravenstein identified a series of principles regarding inter-county migration in nineteenth-century Britain. Remarkably, many of these generalizations remain applicable in contemporary migration studies.
These generalizations can be listed as follows
    1. There is an inverse relation between distance and volume of migration. Majority of migrants moves to short distance only
    2. Migration proceeds step by step. The inhabitants of countryside flock into the nearby rapidly growing town. The gap created by this out-migration in the countryside is filled up by in-migration from still remoter countryside.
    3. Every migration current produces a counter-current.
    4. The native of the rural areas are more mobile than their counterpart in the urban areas, and the major direction of migration is from agricultural areas to the centres of industry and commerce.
    Stouffers’ theory of mobility
In Stouffer’s model, the opportunities act as pulling forces and barriers or problems act as push forces. The magnitude of migration depends on the sum of push and pull forces at place of origin as well as destination.
The place offering more opportunities has greater pull and becomes the destination. Contrarily, the place where the opportunities are limited becomes the place of origin.
Therefore, greater the difference in number of opportunities available at both these places, greater the migration.
Additionally, the availability of opportunities between place of origin and destination intercepts the flow of migration. Hence, many of the migrants stop at the intervening cities and do not proceed to the large city.
