As per IS soil classification, if the coefficient of uniformity of a soil sample is greater than 6 and the coefficient of cur- vatures lies between 1
Question

As per IS soil classification, if the coefficient of uniformity of a soil sample is greater than 6 and the coefficient of cur- vatures lies between 1 and 3, the soil is classified as

A.

GC

B.

GW

C.

SM

D.

SW

Correct option is D

Soil Classification as per IS
• Sand is said to be well-graded if the uniformity coefficient (Cu) is greater than 6 and the
coefficient of curvature (CC) lies in between 1 to 3
• Gravel is said to be well-graded if the uniformity coefficient (Cu) is greater than 4 and
the coefficient of curvature (CC) lies in between 1 to 3.
Calculation: In this case, our soil is sand and it is given as Cu > 6, and Cc lies in between 1 and 3 so it is well-graded sand or SW.
