Madhya Pradesh's tribal-dominatedMandla region has become the first fully "functionally literate" district in the country.
· In 2011, the literacy rate in Mandla was 68%. A 2020 report found that over 2.25 lakh people in the district were not literate, most of them being tribals living in forest areas.
· The district administration launched a campaign in 2020 called " Niraksharta Se AzadiAbhiyaan" to make residents fully literate. The campaign involved the school education department, the women and child development department, Anganwadi workers, and social workers.
· The district collector claimed that all the people were able to write their names, count, and read within two year.
Functional literacy- A person is considered functionally literate if they can write their own name, count, and read and write in Hindi.
