Question

An electrician bought 500 m of wire. He sold 43 m 75 cm of the wire to one customer and 158 m 50 cm to another customer. Wire left with him is

A.

298.25 m

B.

298.20 m

C.

297.75 m

D.

298.425 m

Correct option is C

Given:

Total wire bought = 500 m

Wire sold:

To first customer = 43 m 75 cm

To second customer = 158 m 50 cm

Formula Used:

1 m = 100 cm

Wire left = Total wire − Total wire sold

Solution:

First, add the wire sold:

43 m 75 cm + 158m 50 cm

Metres: 43 + 158 = 201m

Centimetres: 75 + 50 = 125 cm = 1m 25cm

Total wire sold:

201m + 1m 25cm = 202m 25cm

Now subtract from total wire:

500m - 202m25cm

Borrow 1 m = 100 cm:

499m100cm - 202m25cm

= 297m75cm

Wire left with the electrician = 297.75 m
