Question

According to Newland's Law of Octaves, the properties of beryllium are similar to those of _______.

A.

B

B.

C

C.

Al

D.

Mg

Correct option is D

Sol: The correct answer is (d) Mg

According to Newland's Law of Octaves, the properties of beryllium (Be) are similar to those of magnesium (Mg).

Key Points:

  • Proposed by John Newlands in 1864 based on periodicity of the properties of the elements.
  • Newlands closely combined the known elements according to the increasing values of their atomic weights.
  • This was one of the earliest attempts to arrange elements according to periodic properties.
  • Elements were fueled such that the chemical and physical properties would repeat after every 7th element.
  • Be and Mg are neighbours being the 4th and 12th elements respectively.
  • Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) exhibit similarities, being the 8th and 16th elements respectively.
  • Newlands gave us a satisfactory periodic table up to the first 20 elements, but for heavier elements, it did not work.
