Question

A vendor bought lemons at 7 for ₹1. How many lemons must he sell for ₹1 to gain 40%?

A.

6

B.

9

C.

5

D.

7

Correct option is C

Given:

Cost price (CP): 7 lemons for ₹1

CP per lemon =17.=\frac{₹1}{7}.

Required gain = 40%.

Formula Used:

Selling price per lemon =CP×(1+gain%)\text{CP} \times (1+\text{gain}\%)

Lemons per ₹1 =1SP per lemon.\dfrac{1}{\text{SP per lemon}}.

Solution:
SP per lemon =17×1.40=1470=15\dfrac{1}{7}\times 1.40=\dfrac{14}{70}=\dfrac{1}{5} rupee.
Lemons per ₹1 =115=5=\dfrac{1}{\frac15}=5

Alternate Method :
To get (40%) gain, SP : CP = 140 : 100 = 7 : 5.
If CP of 7 lemons is ₹1, then SP of 5 lemons is ₹1

sell 5 lemons for ₹1.
