Question

A person travels by motorcycle to a place at an average speed of 60 km/h and returns at an average speed of 30 km/h. Find his average speed (in km/h) for the whole journey.

A.

40

B.

55

C.

45

D.

50

Correct option is A

Given:
S1= 60 km/h
S2 = 30 km/h

Formula Used:

Average Speed=2×S1×S2S1+S2\text{Average Speed} = \frac{2 \times S_1 \times S_2}{S_1 + S_2}

where S1 S_1 andS2S_2 are the speeds in the two directions.

Solution:

Average Speed=2×60×3060+30=360090=40 km/h\text{Average Speed} = \frac{2 \times 60 \times 30}{60 + 30} = \frac{3600}{90} = 40 \text{ km/h}
