    Question

    A person drives 110 miles at 55 miles per hour, he drives the next 120 miles at 60 miles per hour, and then he drives the next 60 miles in an hour. What is his average speed for the entire journey in miles per hour ?

    A.

    58

    B.

    55

    C.

    63

    D.

    60

    Correct option is A

    Given:
    Total distance = 110 + 120 + 60 = 290 miles
    Speeds, S1= 55 miles/h, S2 = 60mile/h, S3 = 60 mile/h.
    Formula Used:
    Average speed = (total distance)(total time)\frac{(total \ distance )}{(total \ time)}
    Time =  distancespeed\frac{distance}{speed}
    Solution:
    T1=11055=2h T2=12060=2h T3=1h(given)T_1= \frac{110}{55}=2h \\\ \\T_2= \frac{120}{60}=2h \\\ \\T_3 = 1h (given)
    Average speed =  290(2+2+1)=2905=58 miles/h\frac{290}{(2+2+1)}= \frac{290}{5}= 58 \ miles/h
