Question

A doubly reinforced beam is used when:

A.

Extra safety is required

B.

Large moment is experienced by the beam

C.

Beam experiences tension in top as well as-bottom fibres

D.

Depth and breadth of the beam have to be restricted for reason of appearance etc.

Correct option is D

As the required moment of resistance increases. we have to increase depth of the beam to counter the bending moment. But if due to reasons such as head room clearance or asthetics purpose. We cannot increase the depth. then we have to provide additional compression steel so as to take that moment. This is known as doubly reinforced beam.
