Question

A bipolar transistor is specified to have forward current gain in the range of 8 to 40. The load resistance is 11 Ω. The dc supply voltage VCC = 200 V and input voltage to the base circuit is 10 V. If VCE Sat = 1.0 V and VBE Sat = 1.5 V, what is the collector saturation current?

A.

144.4 A

B.

18.09 A

C.

0.045 A

D.

17.27 A

Correct option is B

Collector saturation current:
 When the transistor is operating in saturation, the current through the transistor is the maximum possible value.
 This current is called collector saturation current
 It is independent of the DC current gain of the transistor.
Circuit diagram of BJT:

Apply KVL in the outer loop

VCC=ICSRL+VCE(sat)V_{CC} = I_{CS} R_L + V_{CE} (\text{sat})

200=(ICS×11)+1200 = (I_{CS} \times 11) + 1

ICS=18.09 AI_{CS} = 18.09 \text{ A}

Therefore, the collector saturation current is 18.09 A.
