Question

A 70 cm long wire is to be cut into two pieces so that one piece will be 2/5 of the other. How many centimetres will the shorter piece be?

A.

10 cm

B.

25 cm

C.

30 cm

D.

20 cm

Correct option is D

Given:

- Total length of the wire = 70 cm

- One piece is 2/5 of the length of the other piece

Concept Used:

Let the length of the longer piece be x cm.

Then, the length of the shorter piece = (2/5) × x

Solution:

The sum of both pieces is equal to the total length of the wire.

x+(25)×x=70 =>(5x+2x)5=70 =>7x5=70 =>7x=70×5=350=>x=3507=50x + (\frac{2}{5}) × x = 70 \\\ \\=> \frac{(5x + 2x) }{ 5} = 70 \\\ \\=> \frac{7x }{ 5 }= 70 \\\ \\=> 7x = 70 × 5 = 350=> x = \frac{350 }{7 }= 50 cm (length of the longer piece)

The length of the shorter piece = (2/5) × 50 = 20 cm

The length of the shorter piece will be 20 cm.
