2 women Navy officers return after

historic transoceanic expedition

Why in news? 

  • The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel INSV Tarini returned to her base port at Goa on April 21 after a historic transoceanic expedition of nearly two months.
  • The expedition was undertaken by two women officers of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K. and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. 
  • They are the first from India to accomplish such a feat.
  • The two officers are now preparing for their next monumental voyage, a circumnavigation of the globe, the Sagar Parikrama-IV expedition, on INSV Tarini, scheduled to commence in September this year.

  • The Ukrainian army announced that it hit and damaged the Russian ship ‘Kommunua’ in the city of Sevastopol by the Black Sea.

Exercise Poorvi Lehar or XPOL Why in news? 

  • The Indian Navy conducted a maritime exercise Poorvi Lehar along the East Coast of India.
  • The exercise aimed at validating procedures to assess the Indian Navy’s preparedness to meet Maritime Security challenges in the region.
  • It was conducted in multiple phases, including a Tactical Phase and a Weapon Phase.

KISS humanitarian award 2021 Context:

  • Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Group and a prominent philanthropist, received the KISS Humanitarian Award 2021.

  • The award, initiated in 2008 by Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS, recognizes individuals and organizations committed to humanitarian work globally.
  • The KISS Humanitarian Award comprises a citation and a gold-plated trophy that conveys a profound social message.
  • The trophy symbolizes the spirit of selfless service to humanity, empowering and enlightening countless individuals worldwide. 
  • The hands lifting the heart symbolize the compassionate service to humanity, while the single pair of hands holding the heart signifies the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on the lives of the less fortunate.
Padma Awards Context:

  • The President of India conferred the Padma Shri award to Shri Binod Kumar Pasayat and Guru Gopinath Swain for their contributions to the field of Art from Odisha during a Civil Investiture Ceremony in New Delhi today.

Shri Binod Kumar Pasayat (Padma Shri):

  • He is a renowned poet and author from Odisha, known for his contributions to Sambalpuri/Koshli literature.
  • Born on December 3, 1935, Shri Pasayat started his literary journey at a young age and is widely recognized for his simplicity in poems and writings.
  • Despite receiving numerous awards, including the Sarala Puraskar in 2008, Odisha Sahitya Academy Puraskar in 2010, and others, he continues to work as a barber, following his family tradition.

Guru Gopinath Swain (Padma Shri):

  • He is a teacher and performer of traditional Krishna Leela for the past nine decades.
  • Born on February 15, 1918, Shri Swain began learning Krishna Leela at the age of 10 from his father’s elder brother.
  • He specializes in the Krishna Leela authored by the 18th-century saint Babaji Dukhisyama Dasa in Odia language and Odissi music.
  • Shri Swain has preserved rare classical ragas and improvisation techniques, maintaining the complex archaic methods of presentation.
  • He has received several awards, including the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2023, and has trained numerous students in this art form.
Bhubaneswar and Kadapa Hit 43.8°C, India’s Hottest Spots Context:

  • Bhubaneswar and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh reached the highest temperature in India, hitting 43.8 degrees Celsius each.
  • Bhubaneswar’s temperature climbed steadily throughout the day, starting at 34.4 degrees Celsius at 8:30 am and peaking in the afternoon.

Key points:

  • Heatwave conditions were also observed in Khurda, Kendrapara, Jajpur, and Jagatsinghpur districts, with 17 places recording temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher.
  • Cuttack registered a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, contributing to Odisha’s tally of 10 heatwave days this month, compared to five days in April last year.
  • According to the Odisha government, 89 individuals across 16 districts have been affected by heat-related illnesses.
Panikoili-Rimuli NH stretch  Context:

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to monetize the 167 km stretch of Panikoili-Rimuli section of NH-20, which was built at a cost exceeding Rs 1,800 crore, as part of its assets monetization plan. 
  • This highway is one of the 33 national highways in India selected for monetization in the 2024-25 financial year.

Key points:

  • NHAI aims to monetize highway stretches covering over 2,740 km in the current fiscal year, following the success of the National Highways Infra Trust (NHIT) in raising Rs 40,314 crore through asset monetization in the previous fiscal year. 
  • NHIT, an infrastructure investment trust of NHAI, will undertake the Panikoili-Rimuli section’s monetization through either the toll-operate-transfer (TOT) or infrastructure investment trust (InvIT) mode.
  • Currently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) monetizes its assets under three modesTOT, InvIT, and project-based financing, offering opportunities for various investors to invest in highway assets and associated infrastructure. 
  • Most of Odisha’s long highway stretches have been built under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) mode, where private enterprises finance and operate public infrastructure for a set period before handing it over to the government free of charge.
Odisha Urgently Seeks Centre’s Assistance for TB Drug Supply Context:

  • The Odisha government has urgently requested the Centre for the supply of TB drugs to support the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP).

National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP)

  • India has pledged to eradicate tuberculosis by 2025, five years earlier than the global target of 2030.
  • To align with this ambitious goal, the National Tuberculosis Control Programme has been renamed the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP).
  • The approach extends beyond medical interventions to address the social determinants of TB and reduce access barriers to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, nutritional support is provided to TB patients throughout their treatment.
  • Efforts are underway to improve Airborne Infection Control in healthcare settings and to offer chemoprophylaxis to pediatric contacts of TB patients and PLHIV patients.
  • Plans are in motion to expand TB preventive treatment to adult contacts.
  • The ‘TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’ has been launched as a grassroots movement to eliminate TB in India.
  • India also remains committed to assisting neighboring countries with technical support.
  • India commends the South-East Asia Region (SEAR) for its high-level political commitment and increased investments in ending tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB):

  • TB, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, spreads through the air when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or spit.
  • Symptoms include cough with sputum, chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever, and night sweats.
  • TB is treatable and curable, but multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) does not respond to first-line drugs. However, it can be treated with second-line drugs.
  • Extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) is a severe form of MDR-TB that does not respond to the most effective second-line drugs, leaving patients with limited treatment options.
