Silk production in India

Central Silk Board(CSB)

  • CSB is a statutory body established under the Central Silk Board Act, 1948.
  • It functions under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Textile.
  • It is a national organization for the overall development of the silk sector in India.
Context

India is constantly maintaining its second position in the production of silk with 18% of global production.

Key facts

    • According to India trade portal, the total silk production in India during 2021-2022 was 34,903 MT, an increase of 3.4% YoY over the previous year (33,770 MT).
    • Countries sericulture employs nearly 10 mn people
    • The share of mulberry is the largest among other varieties.
  • Karnataka is the largest producer of state
  • Andhra, Maharashtra, Assam, J and K, Gujrat, Bihar, are other states.

  • India produces  all the five known commercial silks, namely, Mulberry, Tropical Tasar, Oak Tasar, Eri and Muga.

Gangetic Dolphin About gangetic Dolphin

  • It is a freshwater species.
  • It inhabits the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
  • It is India’s National Aquatic Animal.
  • A long thin snout, rounded belly, stocky body and large flippers are characteristics of the Ganges River dolphin.

International Criminal Court Context

Recently Armenia’s Parliament voted to join the International Criminal Court.

International Criminal Court (ICC)

    • It is the only permanent international criminal tribunal.
    • It was created by the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court 
    • It started functioning on 1 July 2002 when the Statute came into force.
    • Its HQ is in Hague, Netherlands.
  • India is not the member
  • It investigates and tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.

Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI)

  • It is an economic indicator, which is derived after monthly surveys of different companies.
  • It measures activity at the purchasing or input stage.
  • It is very different from industrial production which is indicative of actual production.

E.g., the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) measures output.

  • There are two types of PMI — Manufacturing PMI and Services PMI.
  • The index shows trends in both the manufacturing and services sector.
  • PMI does not capture informal sector activity.

The Odisha State Seeds Corporation (OSSC) has announced an 11 per  cent dividend to its shareholders for 2022-23. 

About OSSC

  • The Company was incorporated on 24th February, 1978.
  • It has the main objective of production of certified seeds.
  •  It also aims at marketing it at a reasonable price to the farmers.

  • Kamala Pujari is known for promoting organic farming and preserving over 100 varieties of indigenous seeds of different varieties of paddy.

Global Symposium on Farmers Rights(GSFR) About GSFR

  • Symposium is being organized  by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty).
  • The work under the aegis of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) based in Rome.
  • The Symposium aims to share inspiring stories, innovative approaches, effective policies, best practices, knowledge and experiences.
  • It also aims to learn lessons  on implementing Farmers’ Rights, as set out in Article 9 of the International Treaty.
  • It is expected to contribute to the understanding of a range of issues, the challenges and opportunities of implementing Farmers’ Rights.
‘Rasabali’ gets GI tag Context

Rasabali, a famous sweetmeat of Kendrapara district of Odisha gets GI tag

About Rasabali

  • The sweet is a part of the Odia tradition. 
  • Of the 56 types of items, called Chhapan Bhog offered to Lord Jagannath and his siblings in Puri Srimandir, ‘Rasabali’ is one of them. 
  • The sweet is also offered at Baladevjew temple in Kendrapara.
Biju Setu Yojana About Biju Setu Yojana

  • It is to bridge all the missing links on roads of the Rural Development Department.
  • Biju Setu Yojana was launched on 9th Oct.’2011
  • It is also for the  construction of new bridges on Rural Department roads and important Panchayat Samitee roads.
  • It aims to provide all-weather connectivity to the rural areas of the State through road and bridges.

  • Population of 249 to 100 in IAP districts 
  • Also widening of important roads, where traffic intensity is more, is now made permissible under MMSY.
