Charter Act of 1853
Introduction:
This was the last of the series of Charter Acts passed by the British Parliament between 1793
and 1853. It was a significant constitutional landmark.
Provisions of the Act
Separate Governor of Bengal was appointed
Dalhousie was the first Governor General of India to be non-governor of Bengal
The Central Legislature of the Governor General legislative council was the smallest
parliament.
The Macaulay Committee introduced the competitive examinations for Indians for the
first time in the name of 1854 consultation
The recruitment process of government employees was introduced.
The Governor Generals legislative power was divided into a 6-member Council and the
Legislative Council functioned as the Central Legislature.
The Act indirectly provided for the representation of Indians in the Central Legislature.
The 1854 Report was introduced, and it was called the Knowledge Archive of India.
The State Board of Education was established in 1857 universities in Chennai
(September), Mumbai and Calcutta (April) (Based on UK university)
Significance of Charter Act 1853
The Charter Act of 1853 clearly indicates that the companys rule will not last long. The
power and influence of the company was reduced. British can nominate six directors
Furthermore, it marks the beginning of the parliamentary system in India, as the
Legislature is clearly distinguished from the Executive. The Governor General of Bengal
was discharged from the administrative duties.
