Elements and Compounds
Matter
- Anything that occupies space
- Have mass and volume
State of Matter
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
- Bose Einstein Condensate
Solids
- In solid, the particles are tightly packed with very little space between them.
- The interatomic space is very high.
- Eg. Stone
Liquids
- Particles in liquids are arranged in a random or irregular way and the space between the particles is greater than that in solids.
Eg. water
- Liquid atoms are packed more loosely which allows things to be able to pass through it
- Liquid is effected by gravity more than anything
- Liquids are always moving due to gravity around it
Gases
- The particles in the gases are arranged far apart. They move freely.
- Eg. Air
- A gas atoms are spread out so far, you can walk through it without any restriction
- Gas is not affected by gravity
- The gas’s atoms never stop moving and it never stays in place .
Plasma
- Superheated gaseous state
- Example: Lightning, Aurora, Sun & star
Bose Einstein Condensate
- Super cooled solids
- Near absolute zero (0 K or -273.15 degree Celsius)
Composition of Matter
- Atom (smallest particle of an element)
- Example: C, N, O, Na
- Molecules (smallest particle of pure substance)
- Example: O2, O3
Classification of matter
Pure substance
- A pure substance is made up of only one kind of particles.
- Pure substances may be elements or compounds.
Mixtures
- A Mixture is an impure substance and contains more than one kind of particles.
- In the mixture the components are mixed in any proportion.
