1.“Dravidar Kazhagam President K. Veeramani to Receive ‘Thagaisal Thamizhar’ Award for Distinguished Tamil Personality”

  • Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious ‘Thagaisal Thamizhar’ Award, instituted by the Tamil Nadu government to recognize distinguished Tamil personalities annually.
  • The award, which includes a cash prize of ₹10 lakh and a citation, will be presented by the Chief Minister during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
  • The ‘Thagaisal Thamizhar’ Award was established in 2021 to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the welfare of Tamil Nadu and the advancement of the Tamil community.
  • In the previous years, the award was conferred upon respected Communist leaders N. Sankaraiah and R. Nallakannu in 2021 and 2022, respectively, for their remarkable contributions to the state and its people.

2.Three Iconic Tamil Nadu Products Awarded GI Tag – Jaderi Namakatti, Kanniyakumari Matti Banana, and Chedibutta Saree

  • Jaderi Namakatti, a traditional clay stick from Tiruvannamalai, receives the GI tag: The white finger-like clay sticks, made by the Jaderi Tiruman (Namakatti) Producers Society, have been recognized for their unique texture and craftsmanship, with around 120 families in Cheyyar taluk involved in their production for centuries.
  • Kanniyakumari Matti Banana attains GI recognition: The fragrant and sweet Matti banana, cultivated primarily in the Agatheeswaram, Thovalai, and Thiruvattar taluks of Kanniyakumari district, has been granted the GI tag by the efforts of the Kanyakumari Banana and Horticulture Farmers Producer Company Limited.
  • Chedibutta Saree, a traditional handloom masterpiece, honored with GI status: Known for its iconic “plant and flower” motif woven in art silk and cotton mix fabric, the Chedibutta saree carries the rich heritage of the Sowrashtra community and the skilled weavers of Veeravanallur town in Tirunelveli.

3.Chandrayaan-3 Moves Towards Moon, Prepares for Soft Landing

  • Chandrayaan-3 enters translunar orbit, begins its journey towards the moon: After spending two weeks in the earth orbit, India’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully transitioned into the translunar orbit on Tuesday, marking a crucial step in its mission to explore the lunar surface.
  • Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) tweet announces the next leg of the journey: In a tweet, ISRO stated, “Next stop: the moon,” as the spacecraft is expected to cover the distance to the moon in approximately four days. On August 5, it will enter lunar orbit and commence its orbit around the moon, just like it had been orbiting the earth until now.
  • Chandrayaan-3’s path towards final descent: The spacecraft will gradually adjust its orbit around the moon to achieve a circular orbit of 100 km. The anticipated date for the final descent of the lander and rover module is around August 23.
  • Chandrayaan-3 to make India’s first soft landing on the moon: Launched on July 14, Chandrayaan-3 aims to become the first Indian spacecraft to perform a successful soft landing on the lunar surface. This comes after Chandrayaan-2’s previous attempt to land on the moon ended in failure. The current mission holds immense promise for India’s space exploration endeavors.

4.Madras High Court Orders Compensation for Farmers Affected by NLCIL’s Expansion Project

  • Compensation of Rs 40,000 per acre ordered for 88 farmers: The Madras High Court has directed Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) to provide compensation of Rs 40,000 per acre to 88 farmers who cultivated paddy crops on land designated for NLCIL’s expansion project.
  • Crop damage due to diversion of Upper Paravanar Canal during monsoon: The crops of these farmers were recently damaged as the Upper Paravanar Canal was diverted to prevent floods in mines during the monsoon season. The court has mandated that the compensation be given to the affected farmers by Sunday.
  • Farmers and NLCIL share responsibility, ruling by Justice S M Subramaniam: In response to a petition filed by farmer V Murugan, the Madras HC held both the farmers and NLCIL accountable for the situation. Justice S M Subramaniam ruled that the liability for the loss should be divided equally between the two parties. The court also allowed farmers until September 15 to harvest their crops, after which NLCIL can protect the acquired land, prohibiting further cultivation.

5.7th Edition of Men’s Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament Commences in Chennai

  • The 7th edition of the men’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament will start in Chennai on August 3.
  • It’s the first time the tournament is being held in India.
  • The event will take place at Chennai’s Mayor Radhakrishnan stadium and will run until August 13.
  • Top teams from Asia will compete for the championship title in this highly anticipated tournament.
  • Chennai will be hosting an international hockey tournament after a gap of more than 15 years.

6.Tamil Nadu FDI 2022-2023:

  • Tamil Nadu’s FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows dropped by 27.7% to $2.17 billion in the financial year 2022-23 from $3 billion in 2021-22, as reported in Parliament.
  • India’s overall FDI inflows declined by 16.34% to $70.97 billion in 2022-23 from $84.84 billion in 2021-22, according to the provisional figures from the Reserve Bank of India.
  • In terms of fresh investments, Tamil Nadu witnessed growth from 1,72,974.93 crore in FY2022 to 1,73,494.34 crore in FY2023, with a significant share of private investment at 75.20%.
  • Tamil Nadu’s share in total investments declined from 9.57% in FY2021 to 4.69% in FY2023, leading to a drop in its ranking from No. 2 to No. 8 during the same period.
  • Private capital expenditure in FY2023 saw a remarkable 90% year-on-year growth, focused on specific industries like green hydrogen, semiconductors, pumped hydel projects, and electric vehicles.
  • Mega projects like Greenko Energies’ pumped hydel power project, Volthills’ hydel power project, and Pacifica’s real estate project hold great promise for Tamil Nadu.
  • Foxconn’s decision to set up an electronics components project worth ₹1,600 crore in Tamil Nadu adds to the state’s potential to attract more mega private and foreign projects.
