Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards(PBSA): Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards(PBSA) is conferred by the President of India on selected overseas Indians (Non-Resident Indian, Person of Indian Origin or an organization or institution established and run by the Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin). The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians.

Why In News?
- President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards upon 27 people during the 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention(January 8-10) at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
- Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, US-based businessman Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, and DSB Group CEO Piyush Gupta are among 27 recipients of the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA).

Who Selects Awardees Of PBSA?
The recipients of PBSA are chosen by a jury-cum-awards committee chaired by the vice-president. External affairs minister is the vice-chair of the panel, whose other members are drawn from various walks of life. The committee considers nominations for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards and selects the awardees.

Know About Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA)
- The PBSA is conferred by the President as part of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention on non-resident Indians (NRIs), persons of Indian origin (PIOs) or organisations established and run by NRIs or PIOs in recognition of their outstanding achievements in India and abroad.
- PBD is held every two years to strengthen the engagement of overseas Indian community with India and reconnect them with their roots.
For Achievements Abroad
- Better understanding abroad of India;
- Support to India’s causes and concerns in a tangible way;
- Building closer links between India, the overseas Indian community and their country of residence;
- Social and humanitarian causes in India or abroad;
- Welfare of the local Indian community;
- Philanthropic and charitable work;
- Eminence in one’s field or outstanding work, which has enhanced India’s prestige in the country of residence; or
- Eminence in skills which has enhanced India’s prestige in that country (for non-professional workers).

- Philanthropic investments and charitable work in India;
- For contribution made towards India’s development.

The tradition of celebrating Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) began in 2003 and the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was conducted in a virtual format with the theme “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat” in 2021 during the pandemic. |
