Daily Gist of ‘The Hindu’, ‘PIB’, ‘Indian Express’ and Other Newspapers: 17 March, 2021

1. India-Finland Virtual Summit
Why in news?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland H.E. Ms. Sanna Marin held a Virtual Summit on 16 March, 2021.
Key points are:
– They discussed the entire gamut of bilateral issues as well as other regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
– Both leaders noted that the close relations between India and Finland were based on shared values of democracy, rule of law, equality, freedom of speech, and respect for human rights.
– They reaffirmed their strong commitment to work for multilateralism, a rules-based international order, sustainable development and combating climate change.
– The two leaders reviewed the ongoing bilateral engagements and expressed their desire to further expand and diversify the relationship across sectors such as trade and investment, innovation, education, emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence, 5G/6G, and quantum computing.
– Prime Minister Modi appreciated Finland’s leading role in clean and green technologies and noted the potential for Finnish companies to partner with India’s drive towards sustainable development.
– In this context, he suggested enhanced cooperation in the areas like renewable and bio-energy, sustainability, edu-tech, pharma and digitization.
– The leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues, including the India-EU partnership, cooperation in the Arctic region, WTO and UN reforms. Both sides noted the potential for India and Finland to cooperate in undertaking developmental activities in Africa.
– Prime Minister Modi invited Finland to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).
– The two leaders looked forward to their forthcoming meetings during the India-EU Leaders’ Meeting in Porto and the India-Nordic Summit.

2. Natural Farming System
Why in news?
Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP), is introduced as a sub-scheme of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) since 2020-21 for the promotion of traditional indigenous practices including natural farming.
Key points are:
– Under BPKP, financial assistance of Rs 12200/ha for 3 years is provided for cluster formation, capacity building and continuous handholding by trained personnel, certification and residue analysis.
– Until now, under natural farming, an area of 4.09 lakh ha area has been covered and a total fund of Rs. 4587.17 lakh has been released in 8 States across the country including the State of Tamil Nadu.

3. Sixth India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Women’s Forum meeting
Why in news?
The Sixth India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Women’s Forum meeting was held virtually on 16th March, 2021.
Key points are:
– The meeting was led by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, the event witnessed the participation of Ministers and officials responsible for Women Affairs of IBSA Countries.
– The India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Trilateral Cooperation Forum is a unique platform that brings together India, Brazil and South Africa, three large democracies and major economies from three different continents.
– All three partners are developing pluralistic, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious nations.
– IBSA is committed to inclusive sustainable development, in pursuit of the well-being of its citizens and those from the other developing nations.
– The principles, norms and values underpinning the IBSA Dialogue Forum are participatory democracy, respect for human rights, the Rule of Law and the strengthening of multilateralism.
– IBSA lays efforts in the South-South cooperation beyond the conventional areas of exchange of experts and training.
– During the consultation, the Forum discussed key issues that contribute towards the transformation of women’s lives; by highlighting initiatives, policies and best practices for a gender-inclusive economy for transformation as well as for the elimination of gender-based discrimination and violence against women, which in the coming time will help not only in understanding each others’ systems and programmes but will also carve a strategic roadmap to promote gender equality agenda for achieving sustainable development goals.
– The Forum emphasized the necessity to raise a voice on various multilateral fora to highlight the development priorities of the associate countries and emphasized how gender equality makes sound economic sense.
– The Forum has resolved to carry forth its vision to ensure improving the status and condition of women by addressing structural and institutional barriers as well as strengthening gender mainstreaming.
– At the end of the conference, a joint declaration was also issued highlighting the shared IBSA goals and commitments for achieving gender equality in all spheres of life.

4. Visit of Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh
Why in news?
At the invitation of Prime Minister H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Bangladesh on March 26 & 27, 2021.
Key points are:
– This visit is in connection with the commemoration of three epochal events – Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh; and 50 years of Bangladesh’s war of liberation. Prime Minister had last visited Bangladesh in 2015.
– During the visit, Prime Minister will attend the National Day programme of Bangladesh on March 26, as the guest of honour.
– The programme of the Prime Minister, apart from holding bilateral consultations with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also includes a call on the President of Bangladesh H.E. Md. Abdul Hamid. Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr A.K. Abdul Momen will call on the Prime Minister.
– The visit of the Prime Minister to Bangladesh will be the first visit to a foreign country since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. This highlights the priority India attaches to Bangladesh.

5. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
Why in news?
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on his birth anniversary on 17 March, 2021.
The Prime Minister said, “My heartfelt homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a champion of human rights and freedom, on his birth anniversary. He is a hero for all Indians too. It will be my honour to visit Bangladesh later this month for the historic #MujibBorsho celebrations.”

6. Haryana Yog Aayog Bill 2021
Why in news?
Haryana Vidhan Sabha on March 15, 2021, passed Haryana Yog Aayog Bill 2021 along with the 4 other bills.
Key points are:
– The Yog Aayog bill by the government has been passed to establish Haryana Yog Aayog for the management, regulation, promotion, and training of yoga.
– The Yog Aayog bill seeks to develop a system of naturopathy system of medicine.

7. Oscars 2021 nominations
Why in news?
The names of the nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced on March 15, 2021, by actor Priyanka Chopra and her husband Nick Jonas.
Key points are:
– The nominations have been announced for a total of 23 categories, including Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Adapted Screenplay among others.
– The awards will be held on April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles.

8. Deb Haaland
Why in news?
The US Senate voted to confirm Deb Haaland as US President Joe Biden’s Interior Secretary on March 15, 2021.
Key points are:
– Haaland has become the first-ever Native American Cabinet secretary.
– Haaland was confirmed for the post with a 51-40 vote, with most of the Republicans voting against her after her views on public land use and fossil fuels were called extreme. Four Republicans, however, joined all Democrats to vote for her.
– Deb Haaland was first elected as one of the two first female Native Americans in Congress in 2018. She will now be a part of President Biden’s plans to tackle the climate crisis and reduce carbon emissions.
