Solutions

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. Let the average age of the family at the time of the birth of youngest member be x
∴ 24 × 5 – 8 × 5 = x × 4
⇒ x = 20 years

S2. Ans.(b)
Sol. Let the old price of one pen be Rs x
∴ new price of one pen = Rs 0.8x
ATQ,
100/0.8x-100/x=10
⇒ (100-80)/0.8x=10
⇒ 20 = 8x
⇒ x=20/8
∴ New price = 0.8 × x = 20/8×0.8=Rs 2

S3. Ans.(a)
Sol. Let the initial number be x
∴ x × 0.4 × 0.85 = 1428
⇒x=1428/(0.4×0.85)=4200

S4. Ans.(b)
Sol. Let speed of the car be x km/h
Then the speed of the train will be 1.4x km/h
∴ ATQ,
140/x-140/1.4x=25/60
⇒ (140×1.4-140)/1.4x=25/60
⇒1.4x=672/5
⇒ x = 96 km/h
∴ Speed of train = 1.4x
= 1.4 × 96 = 134.4 km/h

S5. Ans.(c)
Sol.
Rs 2 SI in → 5 years
∴ Rs 4 SI in → 5/2×4 = 10 years
