CTET 2020: Chemistry Questions based on Classification of Elements : 4th February 2020_50.1

Solutions

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. Alkali metals have the lowest ionization energy in each period and this is because they are having the largest atomic size in their respective period.

S2. Ans.(d)
Sol. Atomic size decreases across a period and increases down a group.

CTET 2020: Chemistry Questions based on Classification of Elements : 4th February 2020_60.1

S4. Ans.(c)
Sol. First period has only two elements viz. H and He. Out of these two he has not tendency to loose or gain any electron. As such it is the element which represents highly electropositive and electronegativity elements.

S5. Ans.(c)
Sol. the more inner shells there are, the shielding effect will increase. This decreases the overall attraction between nucleus and valence electron, less energy is required to remove the electron, and hence ionization energy will decrease.

S6. Ans.(c)
Sol. Isoelectronic refers to two atoms, ions, or molecules that have the same electronic structure and the same number of valence electrons. The term means equal electric or equal charge.

S7. Ans.(d)
Sol. Due to an increase in the shielding effect and in the atomic radius the ionization energy decreases in moving down a group.

S8. Ans.(a)
Sol. S < P < O

S9. Ans.(b)
Sol. Factors affecting ionization potential:
1. Atomic radius: the larger the atomic radius, the smaller the attraction of the outer shell electrons to the nucleus so the ionization energy is lower reduced as atomic radius increases.
2. Nuclear charge: the higher the nuclear charge the larger the nuclear attraction of the outer electrons so the ionization energy increases.
3. Electron shielding: the more inner shells of electrons there are, the larger the shielding effect and the nuclear attraction is decreased so ionization energy increases.

S10. Ans.(d)
Sol. Na+ is small in size because it is cation. As cation are smaller in size as compared to neutral atom and anion.
