Solution

S1.Ans. (b)
Sol. The substance which undergoes combustion is said to be combustible. It is called fuel.

S2.Ans. (b)
Sol. The Sun produces light by a nuclear reaction called fusion. As atoms of hydrogen combine to form helium, they produce vast amounts of heat and light.

S3.Ans. (b)
Sol. Coal burns with only glow.

S4.Ans. (c)
Sol. Incomplete combustion of coal gives carbon monoxide gas. Burning of charcoal in a closed room will produce carbon monoxide which can kill persons sleeping in that room.

S5.Ans. (a)
Sol. The substances that have very low ignition temperature and hence, can catch fire easily are called inflammable substances.

S6.Ans. (c)
Sol. CNG means compressed natural while LPG means liquefied petroleum gas and both the fuels are gaseous fuels.

S7.Ans. (a)
Sol. Ignition temperature of a substance is the minimum temperature required for the substance to catch fire. The substances which have a very low ignition temperature and catch fire at a very low temperature

S8.Ans. (a)
Sol. Combustion is a chemical process in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen and gives off heat.

S9.Ans. (a)
Sol. Combustion by-products include: particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, water vapor and hydrocarbons.

S10.Ans. (b)
Sol. There are three zones in flame, viz. outer zone, middle zone and inner zone.
