The percentage of the labour force that is unemployed yet looking for work is known as the unemployment rate. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has just released data showing that unemployment rate in India rose to 8.3% in December from 8% in November, the highest level in 16 months. The research states that while the unemployment rate in India declined in rural regions, it grew in urban areas, rising to 10.09% in December from 8.96% the previous month.

Unemployment Rate in India: Key Challenges for the Government

There are always challenges that come across the Government while managing the unemployment rate in India. The key problems facing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration continue to be managing rising inflation and providing jobs for millions of young people joining the workforce before the next set of national elections in 2024. The Indian government is making every effort to lower the jobless rate. Separate quarterly data compiled by the government-run National Statistical Office (NSO) and published in November show that the unemployment rate dropped from 7.6% in the preceding quarter to 7.2% in the July-September quarter.

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) recently released data showing that India’s jobless rate rose to 8.30% in December from 8.00% in November, which was the highest level in 16 months. According to data from the CMIE website, the unemployment rate in urban areas increased to 10.09% in December from 8.96% the previous month while the rate in rural areas declined to 7.44% from 7.55%.

In India State Wise 2022, Haryana had the highest unemployment rate last month at 37.4%, while Odisha had the lowest rate at 0.9%. Seven additional states, including the capital of the country, have double-digit unemployment rates in addition to Haryana.

From country to country, different factors are taken into account when deciding whether or not someone is employed.
