Synonyms Words, Definition, Meaning and Examples

Synonyms (sin-uh-nims) are words that have the same meaning as another word or one that comes close to them. We refer to two words or phrases as being synonymous when their meanings are the same. Synonyms are a combination of the Ancient Greek words syn, which means with, and onoma, which means “name.” We virtually always employ synonyms without even realizing it because they are common and necessary components of everyday discourse. They are available as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and other parts of speech.

Synonyms Definition

One of two or more words or expressions of the same language that have the same or nearly the same meaning in some or all senses.

Words that, in some contexts, have the same meanings as other words are said to be synonyms. The adjectival form is equivalent. The association between words having closely related meanings is known as synonymy. The word is Greek in origin and means “identical name.” Compare with its opposite. Poecilonym is a synonym for the word synonym.
