As per the new revised syllabus mandated and circulated by the Government of India, we have jot down all the necessary details to give you an overview of the very new and revised syllabus divided on the basis of the two terms and the respective subjects. CBSE Class 9th Term-wise English pdf has been therefore recreated by Adda 247 for the easy availability of it to the students.
The Subject English, however tends to scare the students with its enormous number of chapters and the various books prescribed by the Education Commission, that decides the syllabus to be covered. Hence, a proper insight of the syllabus with all the details mentioned is very important for a child to get his hand on.

Class 9 English Syllabus 2021-22 for Term 1 & Term 2
English comes under the “Compulsory” categorised subjects and having a proper knowledge of class 9th CBSE Syllabus holds the utmost importance because it prepares you for the better understanding of the Class 10th English portions and helps you to pass your Board examinations with Flying colors and thus, ace your future. English is further divided into its two branches:
- Literature
- Language
They hold different marking Schemes and have a different syllabus all together. Hence, knowing the both of them is equally important.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
(CODE: 184) (2020-2021)
Now, let us take an overview of the marking pattern generated by the National Institute of Education pertaining to English:

The total marks to be awarded are 100 and the division of marks are mentioned above are of 80, the rest 20 marks will be awarded to the students by their respective schools on the basis of their performance in the 20 marks internal assessment.
Term 1 Class 10 English Syllabus 2021-22
DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE SECTIONS MENTIONED ABOVE:
SECTION A:-READING (50 Periods)
This section will have two reading passages. 20 Marks
1: A Factual passage 300-350 words with eight Objective Type Questions (including Multiple Choice Questions). 8 marks
2 A Discursive passage of 350-400 words with four Short Answer Type Questions to test inference, evaluation and analysis and four Objective Type Questions (including Multiple Choice Questions) to test vocabulary. 12 marks.
SECTION B: WRITING SKILLS AND CONTEXTUAL GRAMMAR
(30 Marks) 60 Periods
For writing tasks there will be internal choice.
3: Writing an Informal Letter on a situation /Descriptive Paragraph (person/place/event/diary-entry) in about 150-200 words based on visual or verbal cue/s. 10 marks
4: Writing a story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 150-200 words. 10 marks
Term 2 Class 9 English Syllabus 2021-22
The Grammar syllabus will include the following topics.
i. Tenses ii. Modals iii. Use of passive voice iv. Subject – verb concord v. Reported speech a. Commands and requests b. Statements c. Questions vi. Clauses: a. Noun clauses b. Adverb clauses of condition and time c. Relative clauses vii. Determiners viii. Prepositions |
The above items may be tested through test types (grammar in context) as given below:
5: Cloze passage / Gap Filling / Editing. 4 marks.
6: Dialogue Writing/ Reporting dialogue on a given cue. 6 marks
SECTION C: LITERATURE TEXTBOOK & SUPPLEMENTARY READER TEXTBOOK (30 Marks) (60 Periods)
There will be Internal Choice for every question.
- One out of two extracts from prose/poetry/play for reference to the context.
Two Short Answer Type Questions of two marks each based on interpretation. (2×2=4 marks)
- Five Short Answer Type Questions out of seven short answer type questions from:-
BEEHIVE AND MOMENTS (3 questions out of four from BEEHIVE and 2 questions out of three from MOMENTS) to test local and global comprehension of theme and ideas (to be answered in 30-40 words each)
(2×5=10 marks)
- One out of two Long Answer Type questions to be answered in 100-150 words, from the book BEEHIVE to assess creativity, imagination and extrapolation beyond the text and across the texts. This can be a passage based question taken from a situation / plot from the texts. (8 marks)
- One out of two Long Answer Type questions from the book MOMENTS on theme or plot involving interpretation, extrapolation beyond the text and inference or character sketch in about (100-150 words). (8 marks)

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Listening and Speaking Competencies .(50 Periods)
Assessment of Listening and Speaking Skills will be for 05 marks.
It is recommended that listening and speaking skills should be regularly practised in the class.
Art-integrated activities like Role Play, Skit, Dramatization etc. can also be used.
Guidelines for Assessment in Listening and Speaking Skills
- Activities:
- Activities for listening and speaking available at www.cbseacademic.in can be
used for developing listening and speaking skills of students.
- Subject teachers should also refer to books prescribed in the syllabus.
- In addition to the above, teachers may plan their own activities and create their
own material for assessing the listening and speaking skills.
- Parameters for Assessment:
The listening and speaking skills are to be assessed on the following parameters:
- Interactive competence (Initiation & turn taking, relevance to the topic).
- Fluency (cohesion, coherence and speed of delivery).
iii. Pronunciation
- Language (accuracy and vocabulary).
iii. Schedule:
- The practice of listening and speaking skills should be done throughout the
academic year.
- The final assessment of the skills is to be done as per the convenience and
schedule of the school.
III. Record keeping:
The record of the activities done and the marks given must be kept for three months
after the declaration of result, for any random checking by the Board.
No recording of speaking skills is to be sent to the Board
