UPSC CSE Mains 2020 Detailed Syllabus: GS Paper-II (Governance, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations)

Here, we are providing UPSC CSE Mains detailed syllabus of GS Paper-II. Topics covered in the GS Paper-II are Governance, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations.

Various subjects are included in UPSC GS mains syllabus and it is important to analyse and well versed with the syllabus before beginning the preparation of UPSC CSE Mains.

The UPSC CSE Mains Examination 2020 will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission from 8 January, 2021. The Mains Syllabus of UPSC consists of four GS Papers, Essay and two Optional papers. All the Mains papers are descriptive.

UPSC CSE Mains GS Paper-II Syllabus

Indian Constitution – Historical underpinnings, evolution, features, amendments, significant provisions and basic structure.

Functions and responsibilities of the Union and the States, issues and challenges pertaining to the federal structure, devolution of powers and finances up to local levels and challenges therein.

Separation of powers between various organs disputes redressal mechanisms and institutions.

Government strives to have a workforce which reflects gender balance and women candidates are encouraged to apply.

Comparison of the Indian Constitutional scheme with that of other countries.

Parliament and State legislatures – structure, functioning, the conduct of business, powers & privileges and issues arising out of these.

Structure, organization and functioning of the Executive and the Judiciary – Ministries and Departments of the Government; pressure groups and formal/informal associations and their role in the Polity.

Salient features of the Representation of People’s Act.

Appointment to various Constitutional posts, powers, functions and responsibilities of various Constitutional Bodies.

Statutory, regulatory and various quasi-judicial bodies.

Government policies and interventions for development in various sectors and issues arising out of their design and implementation.

Development processes and the development industry – the role of NGOs, SHGs, various groups and associations, donors, charities, institutional and other stakeholders.

UPSC CSE Mains GS Paper-II: Structure

– UPSC CSE GS Mains Paper-II consists of 20 questions and needs to be attempted in a time frame of 3 hours.

– The total paper is of 250 marks with 10 and 15 marks weightage questions.

– For 10 marks questions, the word limit is 150 and for 15 marks questions word limit is 250.
