UPSC CSE Mains 2020: GS Essay Paper Previous Year Question Papers (2010 to 2019)

Here we are providing previous years Essay writing (compulsory paper) to practice answer writing for the UPSC CSE Mains 2020 Examination.

From 8 January, 2021, Union Public Service Commission will conduct the UPSC (CSE) for Mains 2020. The paper comprises four GS Papers, one Essay paper and two Optional Papers. All the papers of mains are descriptive.

Cracking the Civil Services Exam requires proper strategy, sincere hard work and serious dedication. But hard work is successful when it is done in the right direction. For doing preparation properly it is necessary to analyse the pattern of questions asked in the UPSC CSE Examination. An aspirant can refer Previous Year papers and analyse the trend of the questions asked in the Mains Examination and do the preparation in the right direction.

UPSC (CSE) Essay Paper 2010
Write an essay on any ONE of the following topics in NOT MORE than 2500 words (250 Marks)
1. Geography may remains the same; history need not.
2. Should a moratorium be imposed on all fresh mining in tribal areas of the country?
3. Preparedness of our society for India’s global leadership role.
4. From traditional Indian philanthropy to the Gates-Buffet model-a natural progression or a paradigm shift.

It is important to select the topic for Essay in UPSC (CSE) Exam. But how an aspirant should select it?

It is necessary to go through all the topics of essay given in the question paper before selecting a topic. Then choose the topic that you have a good knowledge of. Don’t select the topic in which you does not have an interest rather choose a topic which you can explain and write for word as per asked in the exam. Also, make sure that you have understood the topic and demands of the title or topic of an essay that you have chosen.

Good Essay should be written in a properly structured way

Ideally, an essay should be written in a proper format like an introduction, theme, content related to the topic, pros and cons if asked or as per the topic and then a conclusion. You can also include some facts, examples and events related to the topic selected by you. A balanced perspective is necessary while writing an essay and it should not be monotonous. Continuity and proper structure should be followed while writing an essay. You can practice essay by writing it from previous years UPSC (CSE) Question papers and can understand the genre, topics and pattern of the Essay paper.
