1. Brand & Logo for Cotton

– Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister of Textiles and Women & Child Development launched the 1st ever Brand & Logo for Indian Cotton on 2nd World Cotton Day on 7th October, 2020 through Video Conferencing.

– India gets its first-ever Brand & Logo for its Cotton on 2nd World Cotton Day.

– Now India’s premium Cotton would be known as ‘Kasturi Cotton’ in the world cotton trade.

– The Kasturi Cotton brand will represent Whiteness, Brightness, Softness, Purity, Luster, Uniqueness and Indianness.

– India is the 2nd largest cotton producer and the largest consumer of cotton in the world.

– India produces about 6 million tons of cotton every year which is about 23% of the world cotton.

– India produces about 51% of the total organic cotton production of the world, which demonstrates India’s effort towards sustainability.

– Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has opened 430 procurement centres in all cotton-growing states and payments are being made digitally to farmers’ account within 72 hours.

– Further, leveraging the technology, a mobile app, “Cott-Ally” has been developed by CCI for providing latest news regarding weather condition, Crop situation and best farm practices.

2. Jan Andolan for COVID-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a campaign by way of a Tweet on Jan Andolan for COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour.

– It is launched in view of the upcoming festivals and winter season as well as the opening up of the economy.

– The aim is to encourage People’s Participation (Jan Andolan). It endeavours to be a Low-Cost High-Intensity Campaign with the Key Messages of ‘Wear Mask, Follow Physical Distancing, Maintain Hand Hygiene’.

3. Additional Tier-1 bonds

– Securities and Exchange Board of India has tightened its regulations of additional tier-1 bonds or AT-1 bonds.

– They ensured that these risky instruments are less accessible to retail investors.

Changes introduced are:

  • Only on an electronic platform, Banks can issue these bonds.
  • Only institutional investors could subscribe to them.
  • There shall be a minimum allotment size and trading lot size of ₹1 crore.

4. 2020 Nobel Prize in physics

It has been awarded to Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez for furthering the understanding of black holes.

5. 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 was awarded jointly to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna “for the development of a method for genome editing.”

6. 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology

The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus.

7. USA Aircraft Refuelling at A&N Islands

– Recently, a USA Navy P-8A long-range Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) landed at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands for refuelling under the bilateral logistics support agreement.

– This is the first time the USA got access to A&N under the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA).

8. Apex Council for Krishna and Godavari River Water Dispute 2nd Meeting

It was announced at the Apex Council Meeting that the Centre will determine the jurisdictions of the Krishna and Godavari river management boards (KRMB and GRMB), Union Jal Shakti Ministry (MoJS).

– Apex Council has been constituted by the Central Government under the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA), 2014 to supervise the functioning of the Godavari River Management Board and Krishna River Management Board.

– Apex Council Meeting was the second meeting since 2016 which aims to resolve the conflict between the two States over executing irrigation projects and sharing water from the Krishna and Godavari rivers.

9. National Startup Awards 2020 announced

– It is conceived by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

– The first edition had invited applications across 12 sectors further sub-classified into 35 categories.

– 12 sectors included Agriculture, Education, Enterprise Technology, Energy, Finance, Food, Health, Industry 4.0, Space, Security, Tourism and Urban Services.

– The winning Startups will get cash prizes of Rs 5 lakh each, along with opportunities to present their solutions to relevant public authorities and corporates, for potential pilot projects and work orders.

– One exceptional Incubator and one Accelerator each will get a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh.
