1. THE STATE OF YOUNG CHILD IN INDIA’ REPORT

The Vice President, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu has released the ‘State of Young Child in India’ report. It’s a comprehensive account of the challenges associated with early child development in India.

The report has been prepared by Mobile Creches. It is published by Taylor & Francis Group. Mobile Creches is a policy advocacy organisation which works with the underprivileged children across India.

The report said that there are 159 million children aged below 6 years in India in which 21 per cent are undernourished, 36 per cent are underweight and 38 per cent do not receive full immunization.

According to the ranking and values of the Young Child Outcome Index (YCOI), the report named Kerala, Goa, Tripura and Tamil Nadu to be among the top performers, while eight states namely; Assam, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with scores below the national average lagged behind.

2. FIRST EVER VIRTUAL BUYER SELLER MEET FOR LOOSE DIAMONDS COMMENCES

Government of India has inaugurated first Virtual Buyer and Seller Meet for loose diamonds. It is being organised by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC). GJEPC is the apex body for the promotion of Gems and Jewellery Exports.

The Virtual Buyer and Seller Meet will give an opportunity for buyers and exhibitors to connect and talk business over the virtual platform.

4. ACQUISITION OF METSO OYJ’S (“METSO”) MINERALS BUSINESS BY OUTOTEC OYJ (“OUTOTEC”)

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves the acquisition of Metso Oyj’s (“Metso”) minerals business by Outotec Oyj (“Outotec”). This acquisition is done under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002.

The all such assets, rights, debts, and liabilities of Metso that relate to, or primarily serve, its minerals business (comprising the mining, aggregates, minerals consumables, minerals services, pumps, and recycling businesses) will be acquired by Outotec. The approval is subject to modifications that are aimed at eliminating the likely anticompetitive effects of the proposed combination.

4. 5TH BRICS CULTURE MINISTERS’ MEET

The 5th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting was held through video conference under the Chairpersonship of the Russian Federation on September 3, 2020. All the delegates from Culture Ministries of BRICS member participated in the meet.

The meeting was held to discuss the impact of the epidemiological situation on the cultural sphere in the BRICS countries and review of the possible implementation of joint cultural online-projects within BRICS.

The Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Shri Prahlad Singh Patel addressed participants of the meeting and presented India’s perspective to strengthen the cultural cooperation within BRICS through alternative mechanisms of sharing and organizing cultural events in the online format given the prevailing pandemic situation.

5. INDRA NAVY – 20

The 11th edition of a biennial bilateral maritime exercise INDRA NAVY between Indian Navy and Russian Navy is scheduled in the Bay of Bengal from 04-05 September 2020. The exercise would be undertaken in a ‘non-contact, at sea only’ format due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main aim of the exercise INDRA NAVY-20 is to further consolidate inter-operability built up by the 2 Navies over the years and also to reinforce understanding and procedures for multi-faceted maritime operations.

The scope of this edition of exercise includes wide-ranging and diverse activities across the spectrum of maritime operations.

The Indian Navy is going to be represented by guided-missile destroyer Ranvijay, indigenous frigate Sahyadri and fleet tanker Shakti, along with their integral helicopters. Sahyadri has been presently redeployed to provide assistance to MT New Diamond, which has caught fire off the coast of Sri Lanka. The Russian Federation Navy is going to be represented by destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, destroyer Admiral Tributs and fleet tanker Boris Butoma of the Pacific Fleet, based at Vladivostok.

In December 2018, the last edition of the exercise was conducted at Visakhapatnam.

6. CSIR-CMERI DEVELOPS AFFORDABLE SOLAR POWERED BATTERY BASED SPRAYERS

CSIR-CMERI has developed the affordable solar-powered battery-based Sprayers to tackle water crisis in agriculture. This revolutionary technology will help in generating agricultural avenues even in arid and semi-arid regions because the water scarcity will no longer be feared by the farming community. The CSIR-CMERI developed sprayers provide a cost-effective socio-economic solution for both marginalised and small-scale farmers.
