IIT JAM 2020: Admission Dates (Extended), Eligibility, Subjects, Pattern And Results

 

IIT JAM 2020: JAM stands for Joint Admission Test and grants admission to the candidates for courses like M.Sc and other post-bachelor courses offered at various IITs and for the Integrated PhD courses at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. This all-India level online entrance exam is conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India by different Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in rotation, annually. The JAM scores can also be considered as a criterion for admission in various National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

IIT JAM 2020 Admission Date

The IIT JAM Exam for this year was conducted early in February 2020. The results which were earlier scheduled to be declared on March 20, 2020, was preowned to be declared with an announcement on March 16 itself. The IIT JAM Exam was hosted this year by IIT Kanpur. The admission process had already started, and the application form can be availed by the students now also. Due to the global pandemic of coronavirus and the unexpected lockdown that followed, the admission has been postponed. It has also asked the candidates to fill an undertaking to submit the missing documents till July 20, 2020. Admissions to courses like, M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-PhD, M.Sc.-PhD dual degree admission were made available from April 16 onward for the candidates who had qualified IIT JAM 2020.

IIT JAM 2020 Eligibility

Educational qualifications that the candidates who take the IIT JAM Exam should have is that they should hold a bachelor’s degree and aggregate marks of at least 55%, in case of General category and 50% in case of SC/ ST/ PwD category candidates. However, this aggregate should be inclusive of all subjects considered and without any round offs, as according to the official website. All the candidates who are pursuing their course and will graduate in 2020 are also eligible to apply.

IIT JAM 2020 Subjects

The IIT JAM 2020 was conducted for six courses, and the syllabus for this will be divided as per the subjects & sections.

IIT JAM Subjects Prepared by the institution from 10+2+3 level, the syllabus will have the following subject’s topics & chapters, which are Biotechnology (BT), Biological Sciences (BL), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GC), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) & Physics (PH).

  • Biological Sciences (BL): General Biology, Biophysics, Basics of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology and Mathematical Sciences.

  • Biotechnology (BT): The Biotechnology test paper will follow the syllabus of graduation level and will comprise Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

  • Chemistry (CY): Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.

  • Geology (GG): The Planet Earth, Geomorphology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology, Applied Geology, Structural Geology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy.

  • Mathematics (MA): Sequences and Series of Real Numbers, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Functions of Two Real Variables, Differential Equations, Vector Calculus, Group Theory.

  • Mathematical Statistics (MS):  Both Mathematics and Statistics will be included in the Mathematical Statistics (MS) test paper. The topics will be Sequences and Series, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Matrices, Random Variables, Standard Distributions, Joint Distributions, Sampling distributions, Estimation, Testing of Hypotheses, Differential Equations, Statistics, Probability.

  • Physics (PH): Mathematical Methods, Mechanics and General Properties of Matter, Oscillations, Waves and Optics, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics, Solid State Physics, Devices and Electronics, Simple Oscillators, Electricity and Magnetism, kinetic theory.

IIT JAM 2020 Exam Pattern

  • The IIT JAM Exam is a computer-based examination conducted in online mode.
  • The exam is held in 2 sessions as scheduled by IIT Kanpur.
  • The total time duration of each paper is 3 hours.
  • The questions will be displayed in a shuffled manner on the screen.
  • The question paper has 3 sections, A, B and C, in which Section A will contain 30 questions, Section B will have 10 Questions, and Section C will have a total of 20 questions. This means that each paper will have a total of 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks.

  • There are no negative marks for sections B and C. Section A will, however, have negative marking for wrong answers, with 1/3 mark deducted from each wrong 1 mark question and 2/3 mark deducted from each wrong 2 marks question. The questions that were not attempted will carry no marks.

  • Section A will contain Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), each with 4 options from which the only one can be selected. With a total of 30 questions, 10 questions are of 1 mark each and 20 questions are of 2 marks each. Negative marking is as specified above.

  • Section B will contain Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), which are like MCQs with a difference that you may select more than one option from among the 4 choices. With a total of 10 questions of 2 marks each, marks are awarded for questions if only the candidates selected all the right options. There are no partial marks or negative marks in this section.

  • Section C will have Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions whose answers will be a signed real number. The candidates are required to enter the result through the virtual numeric keypad provided on the monitor. With a total of 20 questions, of which 10 questions are of 1 mark each and 20 questions are of 2 marks each, this section also does not have partial marks or negative marks. IIT JAM 2020 Results

The institute had released the scorecard on March 31 2020. The candidates can check their results from the official website of JOAPS, at https://joaps.iitk.ac.in/ by logging in with their enrollment id/e-mail id and password.
