UPRVUNL’21 EE: Daily Practices Quiz 15-Sep-2021

Each question carries 1 mark.
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Total Questions: 06
Time: 06 min.

Q1. The secondary winding of which of the following transformers is always kept closed?
(a) Current transformer
(b) Voltage transformer
(c) Power transformer
(d) Step down transformer

Q2. Torque developed by a single-phase induction motor at starting is
(a) Less than the rated torque
(b) More than the rated torque
(c) zero
(d) None of the above

Q3. Transformer core are laminated in order to
(a) Reduce hysteresis loss
(b) Reduce hysteresis & eddy current loss
(c) Minimize eddy current loss
(d) Copper loss

Q4. Which of the following provides support to the insulators used in overhead lines?
(a) Cross-Arm
(b) Support/base
(c) Phase Plate
(d) Conductor

Q5. The ratio of average load to the maximum demand during a given period is
(a) Demand Factor
(b) Diversity Factor
(c) Connected load
(d) Load Factor

Q6. When the collector-to-base junction in the transistor is biased in the reverse direction and the emitter-to-base junction in the forward direction, then the transistor is in:
(a) Active region
(b) Cut off Region
(c) Break down region
(d) Saturation Region

SOLUTIONS

S1. Ans.(a)
Sol. The secondary winding of current transformers is always kept closed. If the current transformer secondary is not shorted when unused and kept open then it can develop a very high voltage across secondary which may damage transformer insulation.

S2. Ans.(c)
Sol. Based on double-revolving field theory, a single-phase induction motor can be visualized as having two rotors revolving in opposite directions with a common stator winding. At standstill, the two rotors develop equal torques in opposite directions and hence the net torque developed is zero.

S3. Ans.(c)
Sol. The transformer core is laminated so that the net effective diameter of the Transformer core reduces and thus eddy current loss can be minimized.

S4. Ans.(a)
Sol. Cross arms are installed at the top of the pole for holding the insulator on which the conductors are fastened.

S5. Ans.(d)
Sol. Load factor = Average Demand/Maximum Demand.

S6. Ans.(a)
Sol. The transistor is said to operate in active region when the emitter junction is biased in forward direction and the collector junction in the reverse direction.
NOTE:
• The transistor is used as an amplifier when it is biased in an active region.
