Solutions

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. AS per IS 456, the partial factor of safety for steel is taken as 1.15 and for concrete, its generally taken as 1.5.

S2. Ans.(d)
Sol. As per IS 456:2000, concrete in sea water or exposed directly along the sea coast shall be of minimum M20 grade in the case of PCC construction. In case of RCC construction, its should be at least M30.

S3. Ans.(b)
Sol. f_cr = 0.7 √(f_ck )
= 0.7 √25 = 3.5 N/mm²

S4. Ans.(b)
Sol.

QUIZ : CIVIL ENGINEERING 22 APRIL 2021_40.1

If f_ck is defined as the value bellow which not more than 50% of results are expected to fall, then f_m=f_ck so the target mean strength of concrete to be considered in the design mix = f_m=f_ck=30 MPa

S5. Ans.(b)
Sol. volumetric strain, ∈_v = ((δx+δy+δz)/3) (1-2μ) = ∆V/V
If ∆V=0,1-2μ=0 as δx+δy+δx=0
⇒ μ = 1/2 = 0.5

S6. Ans.(a)
Sol. τ_max=(σ_P1- σ_P3)/2
= (130-(-130))/2= 130 MPa

S7. Ans.(b)
Sol.

QUIZ : CIVIL ENGINEERING 22 APRIL 2021_50.1

From the property of circle,
(2R – δ) δ = l/2×l/2
⇒ δ_max = l^2/8R
= 5^2/8×0.002
= 6.25 × 10^(-3) m
= 6.25 mm

S8. Ans.(a)
Sol. τ_max = 16T/(πD^3 )
⇒ τ = (πD^3)/16 τ_max
= π(100^3 )/16×110
= 21.5875 kNm

S9. Ans.(b)
Sol. M_P = fy. Z_P
⇒ f_y = MP/Z_P
=(180×10^6 N-mm)/(5.4×10^(-4)×10^9 mm^3 )
= 333.33 N/mm²

S10. Ans.(c)
Sol. In primary treatment,
BOD removal efficiency = 30 – 35%
Suspended solids removal efficiency = 60 -70%
