Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: NHPC-JE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 1 mark
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Time: 8 Minutes

Q1. Which one of the following statements is correct?
(a) Maximum longitudinal reinforcement in an axially loaded short column is 6% of gross sectional area
(b) Columns with circular section are provided with transverse reinforcement of helical type only
(c) Spacing of lateral ties cannot be more than 16 times the diameter of the tie bar
(d) Longitudinal reinforcement bar need not be in contact with lateral ties.

Q2. For roof truss, the member which is used as transverse member between two adjacent trusses is called as
(a) Principal rafter
(b) Common rafter
(c) Purlin
(d) All the above are true

Q3. If the initial setting time of cement is 5 minutes, it can be classified as
(a) Quick setting cement
(b) Rapid hardening cement
(c) Sulphate resisting cement
(d) Low heat cement

Q4. The length and breadth of a field of area 33600 m², on map is 12 cm and 7 cm respectively. The R.F. of the scale will be
(a) 1 : 400
(b) 1 : 20
(c) 1 : 800
(d) 1 : 2000

Q5. Compaction of soil is measured in terms of
(a) Dry density
(b) Specific gravity
(c) Compressibility
(d) Permeability

Q6. In case of cantilever, irrespective of the type of loading, the maximum bending moment and maximum shear force occur at–
(a) fixed end
(b) free end
(c) middle
(d) any point

Solutions

S1. Ans.(a)
Sol. In Columns,
1. The minimum longitudinal reinforcement = 0.4 % of gross cross – sectional area.
2. The maximum longitudinal reinforcement = 6% of gross cross-sectional area.
3. The pitch of the transverse reinforcement shall not be more than the least of the following:
(a) The least lateral dimension of the compression members
(b) 16 times the smallest diameter of the longitudinal reinforcement bar to be tied
(c) 300 mm

S2. Ans.(c)
Sol. Purlins are the longitudinal horizontal beam that is sitting on principle rafter which is used as transverse member between two adjacent trusses.

S3. Ans.(a)
Sol.

Type of cement Initial setting time Final setting time
1. Quick setting cement 5 min 30 min
2. Rapid hardening cement 30 min 10 hours
3. Sulphate resisting cement 30 min 10 hours
4. Low heat cement 60 min 10 hours

S4. Ans.(d)
Sol. Given, Area of field = 33600 m²
Length on map = 0.12 m.
Breadth on map = 0.07 m.
Area on map = 0.07 × 0.12
= 0.0084 m²
∵ 0.0084 m² = 33600 m²
∴ 1m² = 4000000 m²
∴ 1m = 2000 m.
Hence, ▭(R.F.=1∶2000)

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Compaction is the process in order to reduce void ratio, permeability & compressibility and in order to increase the degree of denseness, stability, shear strength & bearing capacity.

S6. Ans.(a)
Sol. In case of cantilever, irrespective of type of loading, the maximum bending moment and shear force occur at fixed end because there is only one support at the fixed end which gives the reactive force or moment for equilibrium.
