Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: NHPC-JE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 1 mark
Negative marking: 1/4 mark
Time: 8 Minutes

Q1. Based on location and function, Nagpur Road Plan has classified the roads in India in
(a) 2 categories
(b) 4 categories
(c) 5 categories
(d) 6 categories

Q2. A steel beam is carrying just its self-load. it needs to be so supported on two columns (span length, L) with equal overhangs (Y) on both the sides such that the bending moment at the mid-span is zero. The ratio of L/Y should be:
(a) 0.25
(b) 0.5
(c) 1.00
(d) 2.00

Q3. A building is fetching an annual rent of Rs. 1,80,000/-. The purchases desires to get 5% return on the capital. The capitalized value (in Rs) of the building is:
(a) 9,00,000
(b) 27,00,000
(c) 36,00,000
(d) 18,00,000

Q4. Generally, a compound of cement, which is responsible for most of the undesirable properties of concrete is
(a) C_3 A
(b) C_2 S
(c) C_4 AF
(d) C_3 S

Q5. Which of the following statements in respect of a map A having scale 1 : 1000 and another map B having scale 1 : 5000 is true?
(a) Map A is large scale map compared map B.
(b) Map B is large scale map compared map A.
(c) Map B is a more detailed map compared map A.
(d) None of the above

Q6. The geologic formation which is neither porous nor permeable, and hence neither contains nor yields groundwater is termed as________.
(a) Aquiclude
(b) Aquifer
(c) Aquitard
(d) Aquifuge

Solutions

S1. Ans.(c)
Sol. According to Nagpur Road plan, the roads has classified into 5 categories.
(i) National highway
(ii) Sate highway
(iii) Major district roads
(iv) Other district roads
(v) Village roads

S2. Ans.(d)
Sol. When a steel beam is carrying just its self-load and it needs to be supported on two columns (span length, L) with equal overhangs (Y) on both the sides such that the bending moment at the mid span is zero, then the ratio of L/y should be 2.00.

S3. Ans.(c)
Sol. Given, rate of interest (i) = 5%
Annual rent = 1,80,000 Rs.
Capitalized value =?
Year’s purchase = 100/(i%)=100/5=20 years
Capitalized value of building = Annual rent × year’s purchase
= 1,80,000 × 20
= 36,00,000 Rs

S4. Ans.(a)
Sol. Tri – calcium silicate (C_3 S) is responsible for early strength while Tri-calcium aluminate (C_3 A) is responsible for flash setting and when Tri-calcium aluminate is in excess in cement then it is responsible for most of the undesirable properties.

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Note → Higher the R.F. value, larger the scale.
For map – A (R.F)_A=1/100
▭((R.F)_A=0.001)
For map – B (R.F)_B=1/5000
▭((R.F)_B=0.0002)
▭((R.F)_A>(R.F)_B )
Hence, map A is large scale map as compared to map B.

S6. Ans.(d)
Sol. An aquifuge is an impermeable geological formation which is neither porous nor permeable which means neither contains nor yield ground water. Ex. Compact rock.
