Exam: GATE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 2 marks
Negative marking: 1/3 mark
Time: 12 Minutes

Q1. Find the maximum torque in a solid circular shaft with diameter 25cm and when the shaft transmits 250 kW power at 150 rpm.
(a) 15915.4 Nm
(b) 15915.9 Nm
(c) 15915.6 Nm
(d) 15915.7 Nm

Q2. Match list-I (Parameter) with List-II (Units) and select the correct answer using the codes given below the lists:

List-I List-II
A.      Turbidity 1.      TON
B.      Pathogen 2.      TCU
C.      Odour 3.      JTU
D.     Colour 4.      MPN

Codes:

A          B          C          D

(a)        2          1          4          3

(b)        3          1          4          2

(c)        2          4          1          3

(d)        3          4          1          2

Q3. A steel plate is 300 mm wide and 10 mm thick. A rivet of nominal diameter of 16 mm is driven into it. What is the net sectional area of the plate?
(a) 2600 mm²
(b) 2760 mm²
(c) 2830 mm²
(d) 2840 mm²

Q4. The maximum deflection in timber beams or joints should not be greater than
(a) span/300
(b) span/325
(c) span/360
(d) span/380

Q5. A vertical photograph was taken at an altitude of 1500 m above MSL. If the focal length of the camera is 20 m, the scale of photograph for a terrain lying at an elevation of 500 m
(a) 1 : 50
(b) 1 : 100
(c) 1 : 1000
(d) 1 : 25

Solutions

S1. Ans.(a)
Sol. Given, Diameter of shaft (D) = 25cm.
Power (P) = 250 kW.
No. of revolution (N) = 150 rpms
P=2πNT/60000 KW
250=(2π×150×T)/60000
▭(T=15915.49 N-m)

S2. Ans.(d)
Sol.

Parameters Units
1.      Turbidity Jackson turnidity unity (JTU)
2.      Pathogen Most probable number (MPN)
3.      Odour Threshold Odour number (TON)
4.      Colour True colour unit (TCU)

S3. Ans.(c)
Sol. Nominal dia. of Rivet (d) = 16 mm
Dia. of hole (d_h ) = 16 + 1.5
= 17.5 mm
Thickness (t) = 10 mm
Width (B) = 300 mm
A_net=(B-d_h )×t
=(300-17.5 )×10
=2825 mm^2

S4. Ans.(c)
Sol. As per IS 883:1994, The deflection in case of battens, purlins, beam joist and other flexural members supporting brittle material shall not be greater than span/360.

S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Given,
H = 1500 m.
f = 20 m.
h = 500 m.
S = ?
S=f/(H-h)=20/(1500-500)=20/100=1/50
▭(S=1:50)
