GATE’22 CE:- Daily Practice Quiz 08-Sep-2021

IIT Kharagpur has released the GATE 2022 exam dates. As per the GATE 2022 exam date, the exam will be conducted on February 5, 6, 12 & 13. Candidates preparing for GATE 2022 must attempt this Civil Engineering Quiz to boost your GATE exam preparation.

Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: GATE
Topic: Miscellaneous

Each question carries 2 marks
Negative marking: 1/3 mark
Time: 12 Minutes

Q1. A plane flow has velocity components u=x/T_1 , v = -y/T_2 and w = 0 along x, y and z directions respectively, where T_1 (≠0) and T_2 (≠0) are constants having the dimension of time. The given flow is incompressible if
(a) T_1= -T_2
(b) T_1= -T_2/2
(c) T_1=T_2/2
(d) T_1= T_2

Q2. Ultimate BOD of a river water sample is 20 mg/L. BOD rate constant (natural log) is 0.15 day^(-1). The respective value of BOD (in %) exerted and remaining after 7 days are:
(a) 45 and 55
(b) 55 and 45
(c) 65 and 35
(d) 75 and 25

Q3. What is the limiting principle tensile stress in prestress uncracked concrete member of M25 grade?
(a) 1.2 MPa
(b) 1.5 MPa
(c) 2 MPa
(d) 2.5 MPa

Q4. Which one of the following represents relative density of saturated sand deposited having moisture content of 25%, if maximum and minimum void ratio of sand are 0.95 and 0.45 respectively and specific gravity of sand particles is 2.6?
(a) 40%
(b) 50%
(c) 60%
(d) 70%

Q5. A crest vertical curve joins two gradients of +3% and -2% for a design speed of 80 km/h and the corresponding stopping sight distance of 120 m. the height of driver’s eye and the object above the road surface are 1.20 m and 0.15 m respectively. The curve length (which is less than stopping sight distance) to be provided is
(a) 120 m
(b) 152 m
(c) 163 m
(d) 240 m

Solutions

S1. Ans.(d)
Sol. u =x/T_1 ;∂u/∂x=1/T_1
u =y/T_2 ;∂v/∂y=(-1)/T_2
For a flow to exist
∂u/∂x+∂v/∂y= 0
1/T_1 -1/T_2 =0
▭(T_1=T_2 )

S2. Ans.(c)
Sol. BOD_u = 20 mg/l
k = 0.15 day^(-1)
t = 7 days
BOD remaining after 7 days = BOD_u e^(-kt)
= 20 × e^(-0.15×7)
= 20 × 0.35
= 7
% Remaining = 7/20×100=35%
BOD exerted in 7 days = (100-35) %
= 65%

S3. Ans.(a)
Sol. As per IS
Maximum principal tensile stress in prestressed concrete member = 0.24 √fck
=0.24√25
=0.24×5
=1.20 MPa

S4. Ans.(c)
Sol. Given, S = 1 (Saturated sand)
e_max=0.95
e_min=0.45
w=25%=0.25
G=2.6
I_D=?
We know,
Se=WG
1×e=0.25×2.6
▭(e=0.65)
Now,
I_D=(e_max-e)/(e_max-e_min )
■(0.95-0.65 @0.95-0.45)×100
▭(I_D=60%)

S5. Ans.(b)
Sol. Given,
N_1= +3%=0.03
N_2= -2%= -0.02
N=|N_1-N_2 |=|0.03-(-0.02)|=0.05
S=120m
Note→ When, ▭(SSD<Curve length), then curve length is given by –
▭(L=2S-4.4/N)
=(2×120)-4.4/0.05
=240-88
▭(L=152m)
