IIT Kharagpur has released the GATE 2022 exam dates. As per the GATE 2022 exam date, the exam will be conducted on February 5, 6, 12 & 13. Candidates preparing for GATE 2022 must attempt this Civil Engineering Quiz to boost your GATE exam preparation.

Quiz: Civil Engineering
Exam: GATE
Topic: MISCELLANEOUS

Each question carries 2 marks
Negative marking: 1/3 mark
Time: 12 Minutes

Q1. The analysis of a river water sample was done and following results are obtained.
Ion Milligram per milli-equivalent of the ion Concentration (mg/l)
Ca^(2+) 20.0 80
Mg^(2+) 12.2 24.4
Na^+ 23.0 69
K^+ 39.0 78
Cl^- 35.5 71
SO_4^(2-) 48.0 75
HCO_3^- 61.0 244
The alkalinity of water sample is?
(a) 150 mg/l
(b) 200 mg/l
(c) 250 mg/l
(d) 300 mg/l

Q2. A water sample contains 10^(-6.4) mmoles/l of OH^- ions at 27°C. the p^H of this sample is?
(a) 4.2
(b) 7.6
(c) 4.6
(d) 9.4

Q3. The hardness in water is mainly caused by?
(a) Ca^(2+) & Mn^(2+)
(b) Ca^(2+) and Na^+
(c) Na^+ & K^+
(d) Ca^(2+) & Mg^(2+)

Q4. In aerobic conditions, nitrosamines convert
(a) 〖NH〗_3^ to NO_2^-
(b) NO_2^- to NO_3-
(c) NH_3 to H_2 O
(d) NO_2^- to N_2

Q5. A river of 3 km length has maximum flood discharge of 12000 m³/s. the condition is to be modeled in laboratory where maximum available discharge is 0.30 m³/s, the length of model should be as per Froude model law?
(a) 43.28m
(b) 26.42 m
(c) 28.24m
(d) 46.34m

Solutions

S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. Alkalinity is due to HCO_3^-
Alkalinity = 244/61×50 Mg\l as CaCO_3
= 200 mg/L

S2. Ans.(c)
Sol. [OH^- ]=10^(-6.4)×10^(-3) Moles/l = 10^(-9.4) moles/l
p^[OH] = 9.4
Now p^H+p^OH=14⇒p^H=14-9.4=4.6

S3. Ans.(d)
Sol. Hardness is due to the multivalent cations present in water. The most common constituents are calcium and magnesium ions (Ca^(2+)& Mg^(2+) )

S4. Ans.(a)
Sol. Nitrification is a twostep process, in the first step ammonia is converted into nitrite which is carried out by Nitrosomonas bacteria nitrite is further converted into nitrate by the Nitrobacter’s. Entire process is aerobic in nature

Bacteria
S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Q_r=(Lr)^2.5
⇒Q_m/Q_p =(Lr)^2.5
⇒0.30/12000=(L_m/(3×1000))^2.5
⇒L_m=43.28m
