Daily Concept Booster Mechanical Engineering: Classification of Loads

Load

It is an external force or an external couple to which a member is subjected.

Classification of loads

With respect to time

(1) Static Load: A load is said to be static if its magnitude and direction are constant w.r.to time. It is of two types.

(a) Dead Load

(b) Gradually applied load

(2) Dynamic Load: A load is said to be static if its magnitude or direction or both changes w.r.to time. It is of two types.

(a) Impact Load or Shock Load or Suddenly applied Load

(b) Fatigue Load

With respect to the cross-section

(1) Normal Load: It is acting perpendicular to the plane of the cross-section.

It is of two types.

(a) Axial Load

(b) Eccentric axial Load

(2) Shear or Tangential Load: It is acting parallel to the plane of cross-section.

It is of two types.

(a) Transverse shear load

(b) Eccentric transverse shear load

With respect to the distribution of Load

(1) Concentrated Load

(a) Concentrated Point Load

(b) Concentrated Moment

(2) Distributed Load

(a) Uniformly distributed load

(b) Uniformly varying load

(c) Uniformly distributed moment
