BARC Exam 2023: Eligibility Criteria

BARC Syllabus 2023: Mechanical Engineering

  • Engineering Mechanics: Friction and its applications, such as rolling friction, belt-pulley, brakes, clutches, screw jack, wedge, vehicles, and others; trusses and frames; virtual work; kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies in plane motion; impulse and momentum (linear and angular) and energy formulations; Lagrange’s equation.
  • Thermodynamics: Thermodynamic systems and processes; properties of pure substances; behavior of ideal and real gases; zeroth and first laws of thermodynamics; work and heat calculations in various processes; second law of thermodynamics; thermodynamic property charts and tables; availability and irreversibility; thermodynamic relations.
  • Machine Design: Design for static and dynamic loads; failure theories; fatigue strength and the SN diagram; principles of machine element design, including bolted, riveted, and welded connections; shafts, gears, rolling, sliding contact bearings, brakes and clutches, and springs.
  • Theory of Machines: Plane mechanism displacement, velocity, and acceleration analysis; linkage dynamic analysis; cams; gears and gear trains; flywheels and governors; reciprocating and rotating mass balancing; gyroscope.
  • Heat transfer: Heat transfer modes; one-dimensional heat conduction, resistance concept and electrical analogy, heat transfer through fins; unsteady heat conduction, lumped parameter system, Heisler’s charts; thermal boundary layer, dimensionless parameters in free and forced convective heat transfer, heat transfer correlations for flow over flat plates and through pipes, effect of turbulence; heat exchanger performance, LMTD and NTU methods; radiative heat transfer, Stefan-Boltzmann methods; radiative heat transfer.
  • Industrial Engineering: Casting, forming, joining, machining and machine tool operations, metrology and inspection, inventory control, and operations research.
  • Engineering Mathematics: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Complex variables, probability and statistics, and numerical methods.
  • Strength of Materials: Poisson’s ratio, elastic constants, and stress and strain Shear force and bending moment diagrams; bending and shear stresses; concept of shear centre; deflection of beams; torsion of circular shafts; Mohr’s circle for plane stress and plane strain; thin cylinders; deflection of beams; torsion of circular shafts; Euler’s theory of columns; energy methods.

  • Engineering Mechanics: Internal forces in structures; Frictions and their applications; Centre of mass; System of forces, free-body diagrams (FBD), equilibrium equations; Internal forces in structures, frictions and their applications, free vibrations from an SDOF system.
  • Engineering Mathematics: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Complex variables, probability and statistics, and numerical methods.
  • Structural Analysis: Force/energy methods for statically determinate and indeterminate structures, superposition method; Trusses, arches, beams, cables, and frames.
  • Environmental Engineering: Waste and wastewater quality and treatment, water quality index, sewerage system design, the quantity of domestic wastewater, air pollution, primary and secondary treatment, effluent discharge standards, Municipal solid waste, sludge disposal, waste distribution system and Reuse of treated sewage for different applications.
  • Construction Materials & Concrete Structures: Construction materials, Structural Steel – Composition, material properties and behavior, PERT, CPM, mix designs, concepts of working stress and limit state design, beam, slab, and column design; bond and development length; prestressed concrete beams.
  • Design of Steel Structures: Design considerations for working stress and limit states; Tension and compression members, beams and beam-columns, and column bases, simple and eccentric connections, beam-column connections, plate girders, and trusses; plastic analysis concept– beams and frames.
  • Transportation Engineering: Transportation infrastructure, Railway Track Geometric Design- Speed and Cant, length of an airport runway, its computations, and modifications; the design of a taxiway and an exit taxiway.
  • Hydrology & Irrigation: Hydrologic cycles, Precipitation, evaporation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, unit hydrographs, hydrograph analysis, reservoir capacity, flood estimation, and routing, surface run-off models, groundwater hydrology- steady state well hydraulics and aquifers; Darcy’s Law in Practice, Irrigation system types, gravity dams and spillways; canals, lined and unlined, weir design on permeable foundations, and cross drainage systems.
